Hi, friends! It’s that time of the year again when the Lancaster County Plain Community puts on their Family Days on the Farm event! If you’ve never attended this event, you’re missing out! It’s two days of homemaking, gardening and farming classes. This the perfect event for homesteaders, farmers, herbalists and backyard gardeners. It’s geared towards subjects that apply to the Mennonite and Amish communities’ lives but it also focuses on nutritionally-dense foods and sustainable agriculture. You won’t find any Roundup or GMO seeds at this event.

I’ve attended the last two years as a vendor but I always take some time to walk around and see the sights. There are pony rides, sheep shearing and colt breaking. The classes are taught by Doctors, lifelong farmers, gardeners and homemakers. The keynote speaker this year is Dr. Richard Olree. He will talk about how disease is influenced by mineral and vitamin deficiency. In fact, did you know that the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) is based on the very minimum you need to not have severe deficiency – it’s NOT based on the optimum amount for your body. Come learn more from Dr. Olree’s talk on Friday night.

Breakfast and lunch are served both days on a donation basis so please, if you attend, be generous (you will need cash or a check). It takes hundreds of hours to put this event together, much of it education and community-based. The classes are first come/first seated and the event is rain or shine. If it looks like rain, I’d suggest you bring your SUV, just in case the fields are muddy. No SUV? Then there will be a horse team or tractor to pull you out, no worries.

If you’ve always wanted to visit Lancaster County, now’s the time to do it! You can attend this wonderful, child-friendly FREE event as well as seeing the sights in the area. There’s plenty of shopping in downtown Lancaster, with the most amazing cozy little cafes. There are a few outlet centers as well as a couple theaters. Here’s a link to the Discover Lancaster website. And, here’s the schedule for the 2018 Family Days on the Farm event! Hope to see you there!

Hi, Kay. You will need to contact John Esh (or Elam Stoltzfus) if you would like a space at the event. I don’t have anything to do with the planning this year. It’s at John’s farm and Elam is on the board for the event. You may e-mail me for their contact info if you need it. mrfarmersdaughter@ptd.net
