When you change your eating habits as much as we’ve changed ours over the years there’s bound to be one or two hold outs that you just can’t find a good substitute for. Such was the case for our chip dip. You know the one that kinda makes you swear every time you put it on the grocery list? For multiple reasons.
Having read food labels for so long now, it always surprises me when a label blatantly displays ingredients like MSG. At least if you’re hiding it under another name you know it’s not a good ingredient. That one ingredient, MSG, has caused so much bad press, so many health issues and has no redeeming qualities yet companies like Heluva Good Dip continue to include it in their recipe. Why?
MSG is a neurotoxin. It’s also a flavor stimulant. It makes you want more of it – much more than you would eat normally. Ever wonder why you eat more than you intended? You can thank MSG for some of that if you’re routinely eating processed foods. What company wouldn’t want you eating more and more of their foods? It’s trickery, I tell you.
I’ve worked on a couple recipes for this that just have never made the grade. This one’s a keeper. I know this because my son, who hasn’t quite jumped on board with all this natural stuff, refused to eat the store-bought dip I had purchased for comparison after he tasted this. In his words, “What? Are you trying to kill me?” Hmmmm, he didn’t say that two weeks ago when he and his father polished off a large tub of it in just a couple days. I guess now that he has a better option that one is no longer good enough. I couldn’t agree more!
